The challenge

Turn an operational distribution centre into a welcoming celebration.

To celebrate the opening of a new distribution centre, one of the UK's leading supermarket retailers wanted to thank the colleagues who had helped bring the site to life by creating a dedicated weekend of celebration for more than 2,000 employees and their families.

The objective was to deliver far more than an open day. The experience needed to build pride, strengthen employee engagement and give colleagues the opportunity to share their workplace with family and friends in a welcoming, inclusive and memorable environment.

The scale of the venue presented a unique challenge. A large operational distribution centre and adjoining car park needed to be transformed into an attractive, family-friendly festival space, while maintaining the highest standards of health, safety and operational planning.

Our approach

Design a safe, seamless experience around a live operational site.

Working closely with the client, we designed an experience that celebrated the people behind the business while reflecting the scale and ambition of the new facility.

From concept development and site planning to production management, supplier coordination and stakeholder engagement, every aspect of the event was carefully planned to ensure a safe, seamless and enjoyable experience for guests of all ages.

Given the operational nature of the site, extensive health and safety planning, infrastructure design, traffic management and risk assessment formed a critical part of the project, enabling thousands of visitors to enjoy the event safely while maintaining the integrity of the working environment.

The experience

A working site transformed into a vibrant family festival.

Over the course of the weekend, guests enjoyed live entertainment, children's activities, fairground attractions, food trucks, face painting, balloon modelling and interactive experiences, creating a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged families to relax, explore and celebrate together.

Branded exhibition spaces highlighted the scale and innovation of the new facility, while guided depot tours gave visitors a behind-the-scenes insight into the operation and an opportunity to experience first-hand the workplace their family members had helped establish.

Every aspect of the event was delivered free of charge for employees and their families, reinforcing the organisation's commitment to recognising and celebrating its people.

The impact

A lasting sense of pride and belonging.

The Family Festival successfully transformed a major operational milestone into a meaningful employee engagement experience, creating a lasting sense of pride and belonging among colleagues and their families.

By combining strategic planning, creative placemaking and meticulous operational delivery, the event demonstrated the organisation's investment in its people while strengthening employee connection to the business and celebrating the opening of an important new distribution centre.
